FAQ (frequently asked questions) for SIP-2012

1. I am not free until the end of May. Can I start the internship a little later ? Can I take a break of one week during the period of internship?
According to the announcement, the internship programme is strictly for the period of May 14, 2012 to July 13, 2012. Kindly do not apply for this internship if you are unable to come to IISc, Bangalore, during the whole period due to some reasons (say, because your university exams ends only a little later). No request to change the period of internship will be entertained. Also, you will not be allowed to take a break of more than a couple of days during the internship. Even that will depend on your mentor.

2. I do not know anything about the area XYZ (say Algorithmic Algebra). But I am interested to do internship in that area. Can I select Algorithmic Algebra as my preference ?
The default condition for selecting an area is just that you should be interested in that area. Your prior knowledge in that subject is not important. But in the case of some areas, the mentors have given some extra information. In such cases, you will see a hyperlink below that topic, which will take you to the homepage of the mentor for that topic, where you can see more information about the particular mentor's extra requirements for his/her topic.

3. I am a Master of Engineering/ Master of Technology student. Am I eligible to apply?
No. You are not eligible to apply.

4. I have made a mistake in the application form. (For example: I have given the name of a referee, but now I want to change it.) Is there a remedy for this ?
No. As of now, we do not have a provision for resubmitting the application form. You are requested to check everything very carefully, before submitting the application form.

5. I am interested in both Algorithmic Algebera and Graph Theory. In order to be considered for both, can I submit two different applications ?
No. One candidate is allowed to submit only one application. If you are interested in both Graph Theory and Algorithmic Algebra, you have to decide beforehand, which one is your FIRST preference. Most probably you will be considered only for your first preference. If it is noticed that the same candidate has submitted multiple application, all his/her applications will be cancelled.

6. I am a student in a university/institute outside India. Am I eligible to apply ?
No. You are not. This is exclusively for students studying in India.

7. Is there a separate application procedure for SC/ST candidates ?
No. In the application form you are asked to fill in this detail. That is all.

8. Our university follows a CGPA system. How will I convert this to percentage?
Simple. If your CGPA system is out of x and your CGPA is y, then the corresponding percentage is y/x times 100. For example, if you have CGPA of 8.2 out of 10, then the corresponding percentage is 82.

9. I want to do the summer internship in ABC (say Computational Complexity), but this area is not listed in the list of topics. Can you add this also?
No. It is not possible to add new topics. The areas are listed by consulting the faculty members of CSA and SERC departments of IISc. The list is prepared based on the willingness of the faculty members to be a mentor and their preferred areas. For example, there is no faculty member who is willing to mentor summer interns in Computational Complexity. That is why that area is not listed. So, if your preferred area is not listed, please do not apply for this internship programme.

10. I do not have my marks card yet. Can I apply?
Better not. If you are selected, you will have to bring an attested photo copy of your marks card with you.

11. Will I get a certificate after completing the internship ?
Yes. You will get a certificate, signed by the Chairman of CSA/SERC department of IISc.

12. I am in XYZ university and in my university, Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) is called Telecommunication Engineering. (Or, more or less, we study the same subjects the ECE students study in other universities). But you have listed only ECE in the list of eligible branches in the internship announcement. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes. You can apply. We are aware that some branches are known by different names in different universities. We cannot find out and list all of them. If you are convinced that your branch is approximately the same as one of the listed branches, you may go ahead and apply. Just use your common sense: For example, you know very well that Mechanical Engineering will not be considered equivalent to Electrical Engineering.

13. I am an integrated M. Tech student. Am I eligible? I see that internship is only for B.Tech students.
Our current opinion is that you are eligible to apply. (Please recheck the FAQ little later to see whether this changes.) This is because, an integrated M. Tech student has not finished his/her B.Tech, whereas an M. Tech student has already got his B. Tech degree.

14. In the branch/subject column in the application form, what should I fill against 12th standard? What should I fill against B.Tech etc.
For 12th standard, you just list the science subjects you have done. For B. Tech, you just write your branch name. No need to list all the subjects you have taken.

15. I am an integrated Mathematics and Computing student of the department of Mathematics, in XYZ university. Am I eligible to apply?
Our current opinion is that you are eligible to apply. (Please recheck the FAQ little later to see whether this changes.)

16. I belong to the computer science department. Can I choose as referee, a professor from the mathematics department ? I have taken his course, and he knows me better.
Yes. You can. Please use your common sense in deciding your referee. While taking a reference letter from your Head of the Department is standard, you can also take a reference letter from any Professor (assistant or associate or whatever) who has taught you, and who you think is closer to the area you have selected for internship. Sometimes if you have worked with a Professor for a project, he may be better able tell more about your technical abilities than your H.O.D, or another professor who has just taught you a course.

17. You have mentioned the period of the internship in your announcement. But you have only given the starting date and the ending date. But I am busy person, I need to know several other things: What is the exact times? Is it during the night, or day? Is it from 5 pm to 7 pm in the evening? (In that case I cannot come, since I have a dance class at that time.) Also whatever happens, I need Sundays off. Therefore please let know how many days a week I have to be present.
By definition, the internship programme expects your intense involvement. Though the actual details may depend on your mentor, we expect you to devote your full day for the internship. While you have to be present here from 9 am to 5 pm, by default, 5 days a week, your mentor may ask you to stay for more time. He/She may ask you to work during Saturdays and Sundays also. Your mentor may expect you read up a paper during night, and present it to him/her next day. In that case, you may have to give up your dance class during 6 to 9 pm. If you are planning something else also during this period, please avoid applying for this internship. We are looking for students, who are ready to take this up as the primary activity during this period.

18. My percentage is more than 75 percent. But unfortunately, I have a back paper (i.e. I have failed in one of the subjects). Am I eligible?
The default condition for applying is only that you should have scored, 75 percent up to now. Back papers do not matter. We understand that sometimes even the best students fail in some dull subjects.

19. I have less than 75 percentage marks. In fact, in 1st and 2nd semesters I have 80 percentage. In 3rd and 4th semesters I got only 65 percentage. Am I eligible to apply ?
No. Please do not apply. To be eligible, you should have obtained 75 percentage marks so far, considering all the semesters for which the results are already known.

20. I am currently in 8th semester. (I have just finished 7th semester). Am I eligible to apply ?
No. You are not eligible.

21. I have less than 75 percentage in 12th standard (or equivalent). Am I eligible to apply ?
Yes. There is no cut-off on 12th standard marks.
