CIVIL : 4th March 2008 : Seminar : "Earthquake hazard quantification in the Indian subcontinent"

Dear all,

Seminar Announcement

Speaker: Dr Imtiaz A Parvez, Scientist, CMMACS, Bangalore
Title: Earthquake hazard quantification in the Indian subcontinent

Date: 4th March 2008

Time: 11:00 hours

Venue: Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall, Department of Civil Engineering

Abstract

The Indian subcontinent is one of the most seismic prone areas of the world. This talk will focus on the earthquake hazard quantification in this subcontinent. The strong ground motion attenuation law is one of the important factors in seismic hazard assessment and it has been observed that peak amplitudes in north-east India is three fold larger compared to the Himalayan region. The deterministic seismic hazard map of India and adjacent areas will be shown based on the realistic modeling of synthetic time histories. Subsurface geological effect on seismic hazard will be discussed and some examples of Delhi and Ahmedabad will be shown. The microtremor arrays have also been used to estimate site response and shear velocity of the subsurface geological layers.
