Abstract:
"The uses of aquatic plants for treatment of domestic and industrial
effluents"-
Conventional treatment for effluents is too expensive; the units
require skilled operators. The conventional treatments operational costs
are high and require regular maintenance. So wecan see that numerous extensive
methods are developed in order to respond to small communities needs.
These new methods are integrated inside the ecological engineering
approach that allows to use ecosystems with less energy. The concepts
keys will be presented with the functions of the different roles of the
compartments of the constructed wetlands.
The seminar will will engage the answers to the questions like
Which species should we use use? What are the functions of macrophytes
and bacteria to treat organic or inorganic pollutants? What are the
different kinds of artificial wetland for domestic sewage(s)? What can we
do with these biological treatment for industrial effluents and
xenobiotics?? The case of polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and a heavy
metal will be used to illustrate the issues.
The seminar will bring out new aims of research in this scientific scope
by a specialist of environmental biotechnology lab in the Rhone Alps.
About the Speaker:
Prof.Grard BLAKE is a professor in Applied Biology at Engineering School
of Savoie POLYTECH SAVOIE. His research specialization has been
exclusively on the use of aquatic macrophytes in ecotoxicology and
applied ecological engineering. He has been working on population
characteristics of macrophytes in lakes and contamination of these plants
by organic compounds (PAH) or heavy metal (zinc). He has been active in
studying environmental contamination by pestisides and developed
methodologies in order to study the fate and the effects of herbicides
(microcosms and mesocosms methods).
He created the second French treatment system for domestic effluents by
planted filter systems (horizontal reed-bed filters). His main
contribution is the synergism between bacteria and Phragmites australis in
the efficiency of the system. Recently, his team used labelled 14-C
hydrocarbon (PAH: Pyrene) in order to study the capacities of planted
filters for treatment of contaminated effluents from industrial activities
and created new systems for treatment of contaminated rainwater in cities
and motorways.
