SERC hosts a variety of research laboratories that cover a wide spectrum of areas that are broadly classified into two groups:

Computational science is an inter-disciplinary area that brings together the domain-specific knowledge of science and engineering with relevant areas of computing and mathematics. It educates and trains students to 'model' problems or 'simulate' processes varying across many disciplines in science and engineering. Thus exploiting the mathematical similarities among many disciplines broadens both the knowledge of students and their career opportunities (see FAQ). Some of the areas of current faculty research include electromagnetics, numerical analysis, parallel algorithms, biomedical diagnosis/imaging, photonics, and acoustics.

Computer Systems: Research areas in this group deal with the design, implementation and evaluation of computer hardware and software. Computer Architecture, Compilers, Database Systems, Graphics and Visualization, Grid Computing, High Performance Computing, Multimedia Systems, Computer Network and Information Security, and VLSI Systems and Architecture are some of the areas in this group in which SERC faculty members are working.

Ongoing and Past Research Projects :

Several sponsored research projects in collaboration with many government and private agencies are currently ongoing in SERC. The clientele include different departments of the Government of India (Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Electronics, Defense Research and Development Organization, Department of Biotechnology), Public and Private sector undertakings (Aeronautical Development Agency, Indian Space Research Organization), and multinationals (Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, IBM, Intel, Lucky Goldstar, Philips Research, ST Microelectronics, Texas Instruments).   13. Performance modeling of HPC applications on Computational Grids
  14. Scheduling and meta-scheduling techniques for Grid Computing
  15. Checkpointing, migration, rescheduling and redistribution techniques for HPC applications in Grids
  16. Maintenance, automatic discovery and usage of execution traces for optimizing Grid scheduling and data movement techniques
  17. Trajectory Optimization with High Index DAEs.
